The City of Karaj is located about 38 km west of the City of Tehran. It is situated on the Karaj River, at the southern foot of the Elburz Mountains. It is an important transportation and industrial centre on the main road and rail routes between Tehran and populous north-western Iran and the Caspian Sea. Manufactures include chemicals, fertilizer, and processed agricultural goods. In 1950, Karaj had a population of 7,000 and since then it grew rapidly. Today Karaj has more than 1,2 million inhabitants and has been the fastest growing city in Iran in the last decades » Growth of Karaj. As a result of the fast growth of population, the social and technical infrastructures are heavily overloaded.
