Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin, Berlin Institute of Technology) offers highly‐qualified senior
scientists, postdocs, and senior experts from Iran as well as from Morocco, Vietnam, India, China,
Peru, South Africa or Ethiopia the opportunity to do research in project‐relevant subject areas with a
scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the Megacities research
project „Young Cities – Developing Energy‐Efficient Urban Fabric in the Tehran‐Karaj Region“ (Project
coordinator Prof. Dr. R. Schäfer, Faculty VI Planning Building Environment, Institute of Architecture;

The scholarships enable research sojourns. The different types of scholarships encompass research
sojourns at TU Berlin from two weeks up to two years and partly include a two‐months German
language course. In principle, applications are open to highly‐qualified postdocs, senior experts and
senior scientists from the above‐mentioned countries.
The joint Iranian‐German Young Cities research project with the lead partners TU Berlin, Iran Building
and Housing Research Center, Iran New Towns Development Corporation, and Iranian Ministry for
Housing and Urban Development offers research opportunities together with the German project
partners at TU Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Berlin University of the Arts and other research
institutions especially in the following fields of research:

The research project is part of the Initiative “Research for the Sustainable Development of the
Megacities of Tomorrow” of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
(www.future‐megacities.org) running from 2005 to 2013. In ten international collaborative projects,
among those the Young Cities project at TU Berlin, German scientists and researchers work together
with partners in the eight countries mentioned above on drawing up and implementing solutionorientated,
innovative strategies for selected cities. The DAAD scholarship program “Study and
Research Scholarships of Today for the Megacities of Tomorrow” is also funded by BMBF and runs
from 2009 till 2012.
The scholarship holders are chosen by a Selection Committee set up by the DAAD. The key selection
criteria are the quality of the research proposal, and the applicant’s academic and personal
qualifications.

Application Procedure

For applying for any of the six types of scholarships within the DAAD Megacities Scholarship
Program, you need among other documents:

• A Confirmation of supervision by a scientist or researcher from a German university, who is
involved in the Young Cities Project as well as
• A Workplan and a schedule that should be agreed with the German supervisor.
In order to obtain the needed confirmation of supervision and an agreed workplan and schedule
with your prospective supervisor, we advise the following way of proceeding:

1. Please, have a look at the Young Cities website www.youngcities.org. On the website and in
documents that are available for download from the website, you can find information on the
questions and issues that the Young Cities Project deals with. Please, note that
scholarships within this program are limited to topics related to this Project.

2. You are kindly asked to send a request for supervision either to your direct contact partner
or to the Young Cities Project Center (info@youngcities.org) by e-mail. The request must
include your CV and an abstract (between 2 to 5 pages) that reflects your actual ideas as a
research proposal, and maybe also certifications and any additional testimonials. Your
research proposal should include a) Introduction into the topic; b) Problem of the research;
c) Goals of the research; d) Limits of the research area; e) Research methodology; f)
Structure of the research. We cannot process your request for supervision without your CV
and your research proposal.

3. In the following, you will find a list with the Young Cities Project’s so called Strategic
Dimensions and Dimensions together with the responsible German Project Partners. All the
Partners from Technische Universität Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, University of the Arts
Berlin etc. are eligible as supervisors. From their respective websites, you can find out more
about their background and research topics. Please, indicate in your proposal, which of the
professors or researchers seem most appropriate to you as supervisors.

4. The Young Cities Project Center or Partners will check if your request for supervision
includes the above mentioned necessary documents and will only handle the request in
case the documents are included.

5. The prospective supervisor will respond to you, either with the requested confirmation of
supervision or with a denial or with requests for changes. The confirmation of supervision is
in no way binding as approval for DAAD or any other scholarship nor as a general
acceptance for supervision or any other services by the prospective supervisor. It is only to
support you in your application to the DAAD.
6. You have to include the confirmation of supervision in your application to the DAAD. This
application has to be handed to DAAD before September 30th 2010. Therefore, we urge you
to send your request for confirmation of supervision as soon as possible.
